Cloud storage refers to the use and access of a server-based storage space via an Internet connection. Cloud users may upload their files, pictures etc using a computer, smart phone or other devices. In cloud storage, files are stored remotely in the cloud server and can be accessed from any location using a standard web browser. The on-line services may be offered for free from companies like Microsoft and Google or by a paid a storage provider service.

Microsoft Windows Live SkyDrive is part of Microsoft's Windows Live range of online services. SkyDrive is a file hosting service that allows users to upload files to a cloud storage and then access them from their Hotmail account. It uses Windows Live ID to control access to the user's files, allowing them to

keep the files private, share with contacts, or make the files public. Publicly-shared files do not require a Windows Live ID to access. The service offers 25 GB of free personal storage, with individual files limited to 100 MB.

Tools such as Gladinet Cloud Storage can be installed to allow drag-and-drop uploading directly from Windows Explorer. Up to five files can be uploaded each time if the tool has not been installed. Microsoft added Office Web Apps support to SkyDrive allowing users to upload, create, edit, and share Microsoft Office documents directly within a Web browser.

As with other Web technologies including email  no guarantee is given to the users for a free future access and confidential documents should not be kept online.
